New Westminster Public Library—
Storytime with Dad
This was a proposed design project for the New Westminster Public Library. As a trial, they wanted to see a print poster and social media graphic that would promote the library's new storytime series targeted specifically to dads.
The library serves a culturally, economically, and socially diverse municipality of almost 82,000 residents and aims to provide programs and services that appeal to and are welcoming for all. With mandated goals to advance the cause of diversity, equity, inclusion, and reconciliation I knew I needed to be rigorously cautious with my choice of photographic representation. I also knew this was a near-impossible challenge as the moment a photo is selected to represent such a wide scope of diversity and inclusion something important would inevitably be left out.
Knowing that photography was not going to aid my aim I chose a typographic treatment with energetic colors and simple phrases to emphasize and unify what all dads with young children want to experience. I chose to put the focus on the bonding that happens when a father reads to a child and the valuable learning that both child and parent share together.
