Logorama by the French Collective H5
I didn’t know anything about H5 before seeing their animated short Logorama on exhibit as part of MashUp: The Birth of Modern Culture at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The creative collective H5 is lead by the formidable talent of François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy and Ludovic Houplain. You will certainly recognize this animated world but your recognition of it will also bring some unease. Logorama opens to a bright sunny day in busy LA this tone quickly changes towards an agressive intensity but still manages to retain humorous references. A classic police chase through busy freeway traffic, school kids visiting a zoo and a café vignette all collide when the unexpected occurs. I love how the zoo animals taking shelter signal a clue of what is about to happen.
Logorama is so brilliant in concept and so well done in craft—it’s no surprise it won an Academy Award in 2010 for animated short.
